In 1901, a 21 year old named William S. Harley draws a blueprint of an engine designed to work in a bicycle. In 1903, he and friend Arthur Davidson offer the public the first production Harley, built in their wooden shack factory that was 10 x 15 feet. In 1906, they introduced the first V-twin powered motorcycle, the engine that propelled the company into the premier and iconic American motorcycle company it is today.

Part of the allure of Harley Davidson is the “outlaw” history and “wild” reputation of the bike. Movies such as Easy Rider and The Wild One first introduced this concept, and outlaw gangs like the Hells Angels received much press. Even Elvis Presley got into the theme, and posed in 1959 on a Model KH on the HD publication Enthusiast.
